It started with a poster.
While living in Toronto my friend Jon and I saw many a movie. While somewhat discriminating we nonetheless enjoyed every type of film: art films at rep cinemas, box office juggernauts, foreign or domestic, they were all enjoyed for what they were. That doesn't mean there wasn't a preference. For many years we saw each Woody Allen movie on opening night, it was a special event for us. A great film was a joy. One day I saw a poster for Withnail and I. It's a great design by Ralph Steadman, and it alone sold me on the spot. I knew nothing of the plot, the actors or any reviews. Off we set to see the movie.
To say we were in for a treat would be a gross understatement. Like others before us and many since what was in store was a great cinematic tour de force. I won't go into plot nor will I review the movie in any conventional sense. If you're looking for a review you can do no better than head over to Rotten Tomatoes where Withnail receives a 96% favourable rating.
Withnail and I is one of those films, the kind you either love dearly, or hate deeply. There seems to be no in between, and fortunately most people love it. Unfortunately I believe it remains largely unseen in North America, where it's been relegated to art houses. Withnail has gained cult status, where people quote dialogue knowingly, and watch the film at every opportunity. The film is available on DVD, although it's tough to find.
If you've never seen Withnail and I, do yourself a favour and find it. I envy you the first viewing of this treasure. You'll want to see it again and again!
