Drinking my Koolaid
I’m Canadian, and I can’t vote in the American election. I am also a political junkie and have followed the Democratic race in the U.S. as closely as any American. As an earlier post shows, my choice for the nominee has been Hillary Clinton. The chief reasons for this are simple: I saw her as the most electable of the two candidates, and I saw Obama’s goal of change as well nigh impossible in the American political culture, and doomed to stunning failure.
I am also man enough to admit when I am wrong.
I still believe Hillary is highly electable, and that she must be considered an important force in the Obama campaign and the DNC going forward.
I also believe that Obama’s campaign for hope and change will be a massive struggle against the inured interests in Washington.
But Obama will be the nominee. And I will support him from above the 49th parallel.
I don’t think Hillary is evil, nor do I think she represents what Obama is fighting against. I cringe at the epithets and mud slung by Obama supporters at Hillary. They justify their actions but stating the comments are in defense of the Clinton campaigns use of “racism” or negative campaigning and attack ads. These are the ones who need to truly listen to Obama’s desire for change and rise above their often youthful transgressions.
So, I have had my sip of the Koolaid. My support for Obama is sincere, and I will be pressing from afar for him to fulfill the promise he seems to represent. Let’s hope America allows him the opportunity to do so, and to earn back some respect from the rest of the world.
